Amec Foster Wheeler wins contract for modifications to CFB boiler, Estonia
- State-of-the-art EPC project utilising retort gas from oil shale
- Upgrade of CFB boiler to increase environmental benefits
- Enefit Energy's 100-MWe CFB boiler to co-fire up to 50% retort gas with Estonian oil shale
Amec Foster Wheeler announces today that its Global Power Group has been awarded a contract from Enefit Energy in Estonia for the delivery of a boiler technology upgrade project. This will increase oil shale retort gas combustion in an existing circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boiler that was supplied by Amec Foster Wheeler in 2004.
Today, retort gas is burned in small amounts in the boilers of Enefit´s power plants. Once the project is complete, Enefit will be able to burn almost the entire volume of gas generated in the modified boiler plant which should result in higher efficiency and improve environmental conditions.
For this engineering, procurement and construction contract, Amec Foster Wheeler will provide the design, supply, construction and commissioning of modifications and equipment to the existing 100 MWe CFB boiler. This should substantially increase its retort gas combustion capacity of heat input when co-firing with Estonian oil shale.
Amec Foster Wheeler is proud to continue as a core technology supplier as a part of Enefit’s world-class team for advanced utilisation of oil shale in energy production. Our long history of working with Enefit combined with our vast experience in delivering CFB solutions for hard to fire fuels, provides a solid basis for the project.
Enefit is happy to have signed an agreement to further develop the technologies for oil shale fired power production with Amec Foster Wheeler. This project requires specific expertise and technical considerations. Enefit has been working with Amec Foster Wheeler for decades developing solutions for more efficient oil shale utilization, which strengthens our confidence in the success of the project. We are looking forward to successfully executing the work and be able to use the retort gas in a more efficient way.
